Federation Services

The GAIA-X Federation Services represent the minimum technical requirements and services necessary to operate the federated GAIA-X Ecosystem of infrastructure and data. GAIA-X Federation Services are being specified in a joint effort of the GAIA-X community and the BMWi-funded Federation Services project in regular exchange with related initiatives and under oversight by the GAIA-X AISBL. An open-source community-based reference implementation of them will be provided by the Federation Services projects. The consideration of GAIA-X guiding principles, especially security-by-design and privacy-by-design represents a key element in their development.

GAIA-X Federation Services will leverage existing standards and open technology. E.g. open-source software and common frameworks will be used where reasonable and technical standards will be used where applicable. Further, existing certifications and standards for accreditation will be recognized. Federation Services will be enabled by a Federator.

The area of Identity and Trust covers authentication and authorization, credential management and decentral identity management.

The Federated Catalogue constitutes the central repository for GAIA-X Self-Descriptions to enable the discovery and selection of Providers and their Service Offerings. The Self-Description as expression of properties and claims of Participants and Assets represents a key element for transparency and trust in GAIA-X. With dependencies not only to the Federated Catalogue but also to other Federation Services it will be described in a dedicated section.

Data Sovereignty Services enable the trustful and sovereign data exchange of GAIA-X Participants utilizing mechanisms such as Usage Control.
The area of Compliance covers mechanisms that ensure a Participant’s adherence to GAIA-X principles in fields such as cybersecurity, data protection transparency and interoperability during onboarding and the delivery of Services.

Further, the GAIA-X Portal and API as part of the BMWi-funded Federation Services project serves as the integration layer for Federation Services. It will support onboarding and accreditation, showcase Service discovery and sample Service orchestration and provisioning.

The Gaia-X Federation Services are developed as open source and will be made available for Code artefacts according to Apache Software License v2 (ASL2) and NonCode artefacts according to Creative Commons License with Attribution “CC-BY”. On this basis, user groups can organise themselves independently as part of Gaia-X, provided they comply with the corresponding rules. The result enables communities to build up innovative, federated, and interoperable ecosystems for data and services.

The eco – Association of the Internet Industry is acting as Project Management Office to support the specification and development of the Gaia-X Federation Services with partners in direct consultation with user groups to meet related requirements where applicable. The project is funded by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy.
